Supported Employment Program

Provides choice and empowers decision-making

Irene Wortham’s highly successful Supported Employment Program empowers clients to achieve the self-assurance and satisfaction that comes from meaningful, competitive employment.

Dedicated job coaches provide one-on-one support to assist in securing and maintaining meaningful and competitive employment for individuals with developmental challenges.

Job coaches train clients to do the job and stay with them on the jobsite to fine tune their performance until it is satisfactory to the employer.  At that time, the job coach begins periodically checking in to make sure things are okay.

Ongoing and highly effective support provided to our business partners assures thriving program associations at no additional cost to the employer. North Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Services reimburses Irene Wortham Center for services provided.

A short list of the many businesses that partner with the Supported Employment Program include: Ryan's Steakhouse, Office Environments, Belk, Grove Park Inn, Burger King, Mission Hospitals, Target, West End Bakery, Irene Wortham Center, WNC Baptist Homes, Mars Hill College, Hollywood Cinemas, Ingles Markets, Wal-Mart, Fuddruckers, Beverly Health Care, the State of North Carolina, and Harris Teeter Supermarkets .

IWC is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a CARF Three-Year Accreditation for our ADA and Supported Employment programs.

Martha’s Story

Martha has worked in the cafeteria of a local school for the past two years.

“Before, I didn’t really know how to do things for myself. I needed someone to show me how to be independent. I like my work. I help in the kitchen, I make all the salads and do the fruit, and I set up the lunch. It makes me feel good because I know the kids and teachers are going to enjoy it. A few of the teachers like to eat salads, and they come into the kitchen and compliment me on them. That makes me happy. My work is important. I love the people I work with because we’ve become a family.”
